Updated: May 2026
If your iPhone is lagging, freezing, or you’re selling it, a reset can fix most issues. Apple offers 3 types of resets, and each does something different.
Types of iPhone Resets
- Soft Reset: Restart iPhone. Fixes minor bugs without losing data.
- Network Reset: Clears Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, VPN settings. Fixes connectivity issues.
- Factory Reset: Erases all data and settings. Use before selling or for major software problems.
How to Soft Reset iPhone
- iPhone X and newer: Press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold Side button until Apple logo appears.
- iPhone SE 2/3, 8: Hold Side button + Volume Down until Apple logo appears.
How to Reset Network Settings
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset
- Tap Reset Network Settings. Enter passcode.
- iPhone will restart and Wi-Fi passwords will be deleted.
How to Factory Reset iPhone
Important: Backup to iCloud or Mac/PC first. This erases everything.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings
- Enter Apple ID password to turn off Find My iPhone
- Confirm and wait 5-10 minutes for completion
When to Use Each Reset
- Phone is slow but works: Soft reset first
- Wi-Fi/Bluetooth won’t connect: Network reset
- Stuck on Apple logo, selling phone, or malware: Factory reset
Conclusion
Most iPhone problems are fixed with a soft or network reset. Only use factory reset if you’ve tried everything else and backed up your data. Apple’s reset system is safe and doesn’t void warranty.
